God's Precious Thoughts

How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Psalm139:17

In this Psalm the Psalmist begins by recognising God’s intimate knowledge of him, having searched him thoroughly. He acknowledges that he cannot hide from God. He points out that it was God who formed him and concludes that praise is due. So he says: “I will praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvellous are your works.” (v.14) Then he continues by assessing that God’s thoughts are precious in his sight, and numerous. (vs.17,18)

All of this speaks of the wonder and goodness of God – of the fact that he is concerned with mortal beings and takes time to consider them. As such, then, the thoughts of God become very precious in the sight of the Psalmist – indeed, in the sight of us all. For his thoughts include us and our concerns.

How comforting it is, then, to know that God is on your side. Hence, when problems come you know that God is there to work them through for you and with you. When there is sadness he is there to comfort and to cheer. When there is sickness or pain He is there as the Great Physician and mighty Healer. When there is perplexity is there as guide, and when there is danger he is Protector. Even in the case of want he is Provider.

You would do well to remember some thoughts from GodÂ’s Word reminding you of his never-failing providence. E.g. Psalm 46:1,7,11; Phil.4:13; Psalm 23:1,4; Isa.43:1,2; Phil.4:19; John 14:27; Psalm 27:1.14; Deut.33:27; Psalm 37:4-5,25; Isa.65:24; Matt.1:23. These all assure us that God is truly with us and his thoughts are of us. Therefore do not despair, for his promises are sure.

Prayer:
“Begone, unbelief; my Saviour is near,
And for my relief will surely appear:
By prayer let me wrestle, and he will perform;
With Christ in the vessel, I smile at the storm.” Amen.
(Hymn 331/1)
