PERMIT AND OMIT!

Since 9/11 travelling whether by air, sea or land, is a whole different experience. Checked bags are now searched more thoroughly. Going through the security check point can be a stressful time. Empty your pockets! No liquids! Take off your shoes! Remove laptop! Take off your belts! You wonder what else you will have to remove before you board that aircraft, train or cruise ship. There are so many regulations now about what is PERMITTED that you realize less is better. So travelling now requires that we decide before hand what we must OMIT because the authorities no longer just PERMIT us to travel with what we want. With this in mind I invite us all to reflect on the final FF for 2013 and it is this PERMIT AND OMIT!

As we draw to the end of 2013, how would we answer the question, what did we OMIT? In other words, can it be said that throughout the year there are some things that we neglected or overlooked? For some persons it is possible that as they get to the yearÂ’s end and reflect on what they OMITTED that there may be a real sense of deep regret. Unfortunately, they OMITTED having regular devotional times reading GodÂ’s word and being in prayer. There may be those whose OMIT list include missing out on spending quality time with their family members or not bothering to get the most out of those once in a life time opportunities that God would have presented their way. Depending on what we might have OMITTED, it is possible to find ourselves pulled into a bottomless pit of depression. We can repeatedly beat ourselves up wondering how did we allow the important things and people in our lives to be OMITTED?

As we think about what we might have OMITTED that may cause us to feel as though we were not at our best, we must also consider too what did we PERMIT? Did we PERMIT ourselves to be influenced by what is positive and wholesome? Did we PERMIT ourselves to enjoy life to its fullest making the most of each moment? Maybe 2013 was a year in which we allowed ourselves to go deeper in our walk with the Lord. It is possible though that there may have been some things that we PERMITTED that maybe should have been OMITTED. And at the same time, maybe as we think about the past 12 months we are also thankful to God for giving us the courage to OMIT some things in our lives that in previous years we had PERMITTED to our own detriment. This was a year in which God allowed us to get our priorities correct and we were able to reexamine and rearrange our PERMITS AND OMITS.

And so as we wait for the dawn of another year, it is my prayer that God will strengthen each of us to do both what is right and what is needful. I pray that God will grant each of us the wisdom in 2014 to know what to PERMIT in our lives and at the same time to know what to OMIT. I pray that God will give us a discerning heart so that we will be able to clearly distinguish what are the things and people to PERMIT to influence our thinking and behavior and also to discern those to OMIT. And so on my own behalf and that of my family, I extend to you and yours, GodÂ’s richest blessing for 2014. Thank you for journeying with me through 2013 with the weekly FF. Thank you for your words of encouragement along the way. Finally, thanks be to God for graciously allowing us all to know what to PERMIT AND OMIT!
