DON'T HOLD BACK

Not all of us are on the same page when it comes to worshipping God whether publicly or privately. Some of us are in Church every Sunday and other days of the week when it is time for worship. Some go at special occasions: weddings, funerals, Easter, Christmas etc. Some may go only when invited. Wherever you may be on the spectrum have you ever wondered how exactly should God be worshipped? I mean has it ever crossed your mind as to what hymns or songs are suitable - fast or slow; old or contemporary?
Then there are some who struggle with what is considered proper to wear to Church. Do I need a tie and jacket? For the ladies how comfortable is it without a girdle, panty hose and all of the ‘extras’ that are considered essential in order for you to worship. Don’t forget the hat (for some that’s a given). How much of that is the result of our cultural training?

Then there are the denominational issues. Some may say you really can’t be worshipping God if you’re not having the sacrament – the Lord’s Supper. And of course that comes with all of the associated prescribed liturgical movements. Others proclaim, worship is on the ball when you’re being led by a praise team and contemporary band and singing all of the latest songs of praise from Israel Houghton or others Gospel artistes.

Might I add to the complexity by mentioning the divide in the Body of Christ about the interpretation of scripture on which day is the correct day for worship. Or what of congregations that are strongly opposed to singing anything thatÂ’s not in the hymnal while others donÂ’t even want to see anything called a hymnal.

What am I getting at here? Is there any one correct way to worship God? Is there a prescribed formula to be followed? Is somebody right and if so then whoÂ’s wrong? IÂ’m asking questions not giving answers. And I know that reading this today are persons who fall into one of the categories above.

Yet here’s the ‘answer’ that I sense the Holy Spirit is saying to all of us - however you worship, whatever form of worship you subscribe to, whenever you meet with others for worship, regardless of what and how you sing in worship, in your worship of God DON’T HOLD BACK. That’s our FF for today. Quite simply, the next time you find yourself in the house of God, as you worship God, DON’T HOLD BACK.

Others may want you to HOLD BACK. Even you may want to HOLD yourself BACK. But DON’T HOLD BACK! And when you do that - DON’T HOLD BACK - what will be the results? Well to that I will say. ‘I leave that for you to discover for yourself.’

Till next Friday, GodÂ’s willing, in your worship of God, whether public or private, remember, DONÂ’T HOLD BACK and see how God responds.
