LEAVE A REMARKABLE LEGACY!

Nelson Mandela, the father of the modern South Africa, as he has been called died yesterday at the age of 95. Over the past 24 hours the world major media have been recapping the LEGACY of this once in a life time leader. There are some of us who are old enough to remember the day that he was released in 1990 after being in prison for 27 years. It is not only the people and nation of South Africa who are mourning and celebrating MandelaÂ’s life. The whole world is because MandelaÂ’s impact was global. As we think about how different our world is because of MandelaÂ’s life, our FF for today challenges us to all LEAVE A REMARKABLE LEGACY!

Each day by the decisions we make and the way we live we are creating what will one day be considered as our LEGACY. It’s what will be remembered about us; what others will say about us. Sometimes the LEGACY we LEAVE behind is not praiseworthy. It is in no way REMARKABLE. It is unfortunate that for some persons their LEGACY may be one that is shameful and filled with regret. It reflects the words of Anthony in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar where he declares that, “The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interrèd with their bones.” (Act 3, Scene 2) But for the people of South Africa and so many others, the good that Mandela did will not be buried with him on December 15 because that good LEGACY did not die with him. His was a LEGACY that was so REMARKABLE that even after he was no longer actively involved in South African politics his influence was still felt within his country and in fact throughout the world. When we consider the effects of the apartheid system and how racially divided South Africa was for years, what Mandela accomplished was indeed REMARKABLE.

We may not be fighting an unjust social system. Neither may we be trying to correct years of wrong for a people. But in our own little world, God is still calling each of us to live in such a way that by our living we can LEAVE A REMARKABLE LEGACY. DonÂ’t just let your LEGACY be imprinted in the sands of time because the foot prints that are left in sand can be easily washed away causing no one to be able to follow your LEGACY. Instead imprint your LEGACY in a fashion that is more permanent. So LEAVE A REMARKABLE LEGACY in your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbours, co-workers, church brothers and sisters, strangers, friends and even your enemies. LEAVE A REMARKABLE LEGACY that reflects a noble character which is fuelled by integrity. LEAVE A REMARKABLE LEGACY that reflects the core values of what you believe. But above all else LEAVE A REMARKABLE LEGACY that will causes generations yet unborn to know what it is to serve the Lord Jesus Christ and to extend the Kingdom of God.

Each day is a LEGACY-making moment. We may not fully understand the impact of our LEGACY while we are still alive. But if we pay attention to the type of LEGACY we want to LEAVE, then we realize that the only time to do anything about our LEGACY is now. Years from now, might other testify that our presence in the world has made a world of difference. For that to happen, we must decide today that we want to LEAVE A REMARKABLE LEGACY!
