MAKE ME INVISIBLE!

Have you ever done or said something that you thought was so embarrassing that you just wished you could immediately become INVISIBLE? One of those times when you would have loved to do a disappearing act? They may not happen very often but I’m sure that we all have our moments when being INVISIBLE would have been just perfect. But not everybody wants to be INVISIBLE. In fact the trend these days seems to be people making greater effort to be visible. How else do you explain that just a few days ago the Oxford Dictionaries declaring that ‘selfie’ is the word of the year for 2013? Just in case you have no idea what is a ‘selfie’ it’s using a cell phone or any mobile device to take a picture of yourself. Most persons post their ‘selfie’ on all of the social media sites (Instagram, Face Book, KIK, Twitter etc.). But with the trend to broadcast ourselves becoming more popular these days, then the thought for today’s FF may be a real challenge. It is MAKE ME INVISIBLE!

What does this really mean? I don’t know of any pills to take or cream that you can rub on you to MAKE you INVISIBLE. I know that there hundreds of products on the market that can change your skin tone but none that can cause someone to become INVISIBLE. So the plea MAKE ME INVISIBLE is not pointing to something physical. Rather it is for us to see it as a prayer for there to be a lessening of our egos while availing more of ourselves to God. MAKE ME INVISIBLE is a call to the old concept of ‘self-abasement’ which Paul makes clear in Romans 12:3 “Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.” MAKE ME INVISIBLE is likened to the posture taken by John the Baptist who in comparing himself to Jesus Christ had no problem declaring in John 3:30 “He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.”

Rest assured that to pray, God, MAKE ME INVISIBLE is not that easy of a prayer to make. Truth is there is still a part of us that want to be noticed, recognized and applauded for all that we do even for God. And yet, at the heart of the Gospel which Jesus taught, was the lesson of the values of being INVISIBLE. Over and over again Jesus teaches that Christian discipleship is an invitation to walk the path where we become INVISIBLE. It’s a state where it is not about us and our agenda. Instead it is following Christ’s example so that eventually we can say to God in all honesty, Lord, it is not what I desire but what your will is for me that matters (Luke 22:42). And when we do, there are tremendous blessings to be had when we ask God to MAKE us INVISIBLE. It is only when we have earnestly prayed MAKE ME INVISIBLE that everything we do thereafter with our lives becomes a manifestation of God’s glory. It is when we have become truly INVISIBLE that Jesus’ words in Matt. 5:16 take on new meaning when he says, “In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

So today in your living make the power of the Gospel of Christ visible in your life as you pray this prayer: “God through the continued work of the Holy Spirit MAKE ME INVISIBLE! Amen!”
