Teach Our Children to Serve God.

Serve Him with single mind and willing heart; for the Lord searches every mind. 1 Chronicles 28: 9

David presents his son Solomon as the new king of Judah, the one who will succeed him in ruling the people of God. Even as he presents him, he also gives him instructions on how he will be a successful king. He points his son and successor to the God who sustained him throughout his reign. Be mindful that David knows that Solomon will be the one to fulfill his dream of building a house of worship for God. He seeks to keep him established in a good relationship with God. If the house of God is to have the splendor it deserves, then the one who spearheads the building must be close to God. David the father teaches his son how to remain close to God. There must be single mind and willing heart. Another translation says ‘perfect heart and willing mind’. The bottom line is that those who serve God must put both heart and mind in it fully.

I find it interesting that David wants his son to have a relationship with God thatÂ’s similar to his. As such he teaches his son how to achieve this. That is so different from today where so many Christian parents also want their children to have a relationship with God thatÂ’s like theirs but are not willing to teach them how to achieve this. Many parents are busy with the LordÂ’s work while the children have no relationship with God. Others are satisfied to be involved in church while the children keep away. David knew that SolomonÂ’s success depended on his relationship with God. In the same way our childrenÂ’s success depends on their relationship with God. Let us therefore take the time to teach them how to walk with God. It is not enough that young persons should be taught merely to "know the God of their fathers;" they must be warned also of the necessity which is laid upon them, as on all Christians, to "serve Him with a perfect heart, and with a willing mind."

Today I urge us parents to instill upon the hearts of our children the depth of service and dedication to God needed in their lives. In these times when it is easy to follow friends, institutions or the general society and neglect God, not giving Him the rightful place, let us teach our youth to serve in fullness knowing that God knows all things. In so doing we may even succeed in leading our children to becoming better servants than we ever were.

‘Till next Tuesday, be blessed.
