Modeled After God's Image

God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them. Genesis 1:27

The creation of humankind is hailed as the crowning of God's creation. We were the last to be made and Genesis gives somewhat of a climatic conclusion to the entire creation account. More than that however is the fact of the image that is used as a model by God. Have you ever stopped to think that we are modelled after God's own image? Have you ever thought what that means for us as human beings? Regardless of out race, pigmentation, different groupings, nationalities, ethnicity, facial features, intelligence, ability and disability, or any other groupings we have chose to apply, the simple truth is that we were made in the image of God. Although it is recorded (vs 26) that God said "let us make humankind", the actual creating was done by God Himself. It is as Psalm 100: 3 reminds us "Know that the Lord is God. It is He that made us, and we are His; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture."

The divine image carries implications for us friends. It means that in some ways we as humankind look like God. I am sure this is not a physical look since the Bible teaches us that 'God is Spirit' (Jn 4: 24) and also that 'flesh is flesh and spirit is spirit' (Jn 3: 6). It means therefore that we resemble God inwardly. This inward resemblance of God should be visible in our moral, spiritual, political and social standings and choices. There should be a deeper meaning to who and what we choose to follow since we are modeled after God. God should be visible in all that we do. Another thing we should be aware of is that if God is to be seen in all that we do then it makes humankind representatives of God among all other created beings. This places great responsibility on us in our care for the rest of creation as well as in the way we relate to our fellow humankind.

Let us therefore take a good look at the person in the mirror and be reminded that this is the image of God. Yes we are the image of God on earth as well as the God image that another person observes. May our lives constantly speak truth about the God we represent so that others may see God in us and be moved to be true representatives of the image we collectively bear. "Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me!"

'Till next Tuesday, be blessed!
