GO PUBLIC!

Recently the world of social media made the financial news headlines when Twitter decided that it would change the investment structure of the company by doing what Facebook had done some months ago. Twitter was about to GO PUBLIC. And when it did, from all reports, on the stock exchange it was valued at $10BN (thatÂ’s 10 billion dollars!). Like other companies that make the switch from private to PUBLIC, it simply means that they now have general shareholders. As a result, anyone with enough money to invest can buy some stocks in this company once it makes its initial PUBLIC offering (IPO). For sure, though there are risks involved, thereÂ’s also lot to be gained when a company decides to GO PUBLIC. With that in mind I invite us to reflect on todayÂ’s FF which is GO PUBLIC!

Analysts usually believe that the number one reason why many company decides to GO PUBLIC is financial. Ultimately the motive is the bottom line. But somehow once the decision is made to GO PUBLIC suddenly the company comes under closer scrutiny. In some way it could be said that the company is now on display. Its financial records are opened. Potential investors want to see their track record. Closer attention is paid to those who are in key decision making positions. At the end of the day everybody wants to know is this a worthwhile investment? Is this a safe place to put their money? So when a company GOES PUBLIC they are really looking to attract more people to them. But with the greater PUBLIC inspection, it is hoped that they donÂ’t see anything that will lessen the real value of the product theyÂ’re boasting about. So with so much at stake no wonder some companies decide to stay private rather than GO PUBLIC.

Now that leads me to the question – what is the position of the 21st century Christian Church as it relates to the spreading of the Gospel of Christ? Have we privatized the Good News? Have we kept our congregations closed? Do we really believe that whosoever will may come? I wonder how much more impactful would the Church be if all who profess and call themselves Christians decided to GO PUBLIC with the Gospel? But someone may say that the Church has GONE PUBLIC. Don’t we have Christian radio and television stations where the Good News is being broadcast 24/7? Aren’t we seeing record numbers in terms of reported cases of salvation worldwide? Yes that is so and we praise and thank God for that. But with all that is happening sometimes I wonder to myself who has really GONE PUBLIC – the Gospel itself or those who proclaim the Gospel? Just a question!

My prayer is that believers everywhere, regardless of the denominational label, will be mindful that each day that we live our lives have GONE PUBLIC. Yes we will be closely examined! Yes we are on PUBLIC display? Yes others will want to know the value of what we are offering! But we have no choice but to GO PUBLIC! After all the One whom we serve and whom we declare has commissioned us to GO and make disciples of all nations. We have been commanded to make sure that the light of the Gospel that’s in us must shine for the world to see. And it is not for the world to see us first and only, but more importantly for the world to see Christ and him crucified! Thank God for the prompting of the Holy Spirit that says to believers everywhere – now is the time to GO PUBLIC!
