BAD, WORSE & BETTER!

The young leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, has for the past few weeks been keeping the world on its edge with the threat of war in that region. He even went as far as requesting that the few foreign diplomats in the country should have been out of the country by April 10. Well today is April 12 and we still are not too sure what if anything will happen. Many believe that he has pinned himself into a corner and in order to save face at home he may move ahead and make good on his threats. Can things get any WORSE than they are already? And although we have heard the threats, we donÂ’t know just how BAD things really are. Not only those who live in that region, but the rest of the world is praying that tensions with North Korea will get BETTER; for their sakes as well as for all of us on this planet. So for our FF for today we reflect on three words: BAD, WORSE & BETTER.

How often have you heard somebody say that things are so BAD that it just canÂ’t get any WORSE? ItÂ’s a reflection of just how grim the situation is. And when we get to that place our prayers to God most often is for things to get BETTER. IÂ’ve never yet met anyhow who has prayed for things to get WORSE. We all desire BETTER. In fact, most of the time, we are hoping that only whatÂ’s good will come our way. But in this life we will have both bitter and sweet; good and BAD; ups and downs. And even as life takes its twists and turns, the one constant, the one steady reality is the assurance of the presence of God. Peace envelopes the one who knows that ultimately all of their life is in GodÂ’s hands.

But what are we to do when we pray to God when things are BAD asking for them to get BETTER but instead of getting BETTER they seem to get WORSE? What are we to do then? Should our faith in God be lessened? Should we hope less and stop believing that God will come through for us? No! When things seem to go from BAD to WORSE instead of BETTER, thatÂ’s the time to hold on even more tightly and trust in the sovereignty of God. ThatÂ’s the time to realize that we dare not judge the final outcome by paying attention to the current conditions. Remember at school when we got progress report and sometimes the grades were not what we expected. There was comfort in knowing that this was only the progress report and not the final report. And sometimes our bad grades may have gotten even WORSE before the end of the term. But there was still a determination and a hope that we will certainly do BETTER in the final exams.

Easter reminds us that even when things seem to go from BAD to WORSE and not what we expected that eventually it will get BETTER. For the disciples of Jesus that was their reality from that Thursday night when their Teacher was arrested in the garden. BAD went to WORSE in 24 hours as they witnessed his trial and crucifixion. But BETTER came on that Sunday morning when they came to see that the tomb was empty! BETTER came with the news, “he’s not here, he is risen from the dead!” (Matt. 28:6) BETTER came when they saw him for themselves and when he ate and fellowshipped with them! BETTER came when he breathed on them and gave them the Holy Spirit! Today we thank God that BETTER is coming! But as good as BETTER is, in God’s Kingdom the best is yet to come!

So yes things may be looking BAD right now. Keep on praying for BETTER. But if instead of things getting BETTER they seem to get WORSE at first, donÂ’t stop praying. DonÂ’t stop believing! God is still in control and we have this promise that in GodÂ’s time, all will be BETTER. And BETTER is but a foretaste of the best that will be ours one day. Yes things sometimes go from BAD to WORSE. But in GodÂ’s time, one day WORSE will get BETTER.
