REMEMBER THE LORD!

February is here and with it the nation will once commemorate Black History Month. The focus of this month on the contribution of blacks to world history has grown in significance over the years. Once again we will be REMINDED of the major contributions of blacks in all areas of life. And with that REMINDER we will be celebrating not just the achievements of blacks but more importantly the triumphs of humanity. With today being ‘Wear Red Day’ we are also being asked to REMEMBER that the problem of heart disease among women is much bigger than we realize. So there’s a lot of REMINDERS that folks are being asked to give attention to. Today then I invite us all to consider one other REMINDER and it is to REMEMBER THE LORD. That’s our FF for today: REMEMBER THE LORD!

Every now and again we all forget something. We forget somebodyÂ’s birthday, where we left our keys or a telephone number. We donÂ’t feel too badly about these little stuff. But what about when we donÂ’t REMEMBER people? Ever found yourself in an embarrassing position where a person meets you and REMEMBERS you and greets you warmly and even calls you by name? And you stand there holding big-time conversation but your mind is racing at the speed of light trying to REMEMBER who this person is. Some people would be bold enough to admit immediately the loss of memory. Others usually play along with the game with the hope that sometime later they will REMEMBER.

It’s one thing not to REMEMBER people but is it at all possible not to REMEMBER THE LORD? I don’t think so. After all who gave us the breath of life itself? The LORD! Who has put in place all of the wonder, majesty and beauty of creation? The LORD! Who has provided for our every need? The LORD! Who has spared our lives from dangers seen and unseen? The LORD! It’s not that we have forgotten the LORD per se. After all within each of us the LORD has deposited the seeds of eternity. Rather it is not so much that we forget the LORD but that we can choose to ignore the LORD. So we can choose to live in such a way that by the choices we make, the things we say and do, they all would suggest that in our living we have taken the LORD out of the equation. So the call to REMEMBER THE LORD is a challenge to refocus on the LORD. It is making the LORD, just that – nothing other than the LORD!

But hereÂ’s why we need to REMEMBER THE LORD. We can reach to a place in our lives where we have accomplished so much that instead of giving credit to the LORD we believe that we did it all by ourselves. In the end we move away from acknowledging the LORD as the ultimate source of all we have and all we do. After all that the LORD had done for His people the Jews, they too had reached a place of ignoring the standards by which the LORD had set for them to live. And so they were challenged to REMEMBER THE LORD your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath. (Deut. 8:18) To REMEMBER THE LORD then is to recall all that the LORD has done. Beyond recalling, we also renew that commitment which says that our lives will be guided by the LORD. To REMEMBER is our choosing not to ignore the LORDÂ’s leading but instead surrendering our lives to His perfect will. So this month and even today in all of our REMEMBERING, I urge us to REMEMBER THE LORD too!
