ALMOST

One of the challenges of learning any language is that a wordÂ’s meaning is often coloured by its context. Context too can determine if a word is presented in either a positive or negative light. For todayÂ’s FF I invite to focus our thoughts on an example of one such word: ALMOST.
When we hear the word ALMOST, several things come to mind – very nearly, not quite, just about or didn’t really happen. It is one of those words that can cause us to either break out in celebration or to be down cast and depressed. The issue that determines our response depends on what is it that ALMOST happened. I’m quite sure that sometimes we may want to bury and forget what ALMOST was. On the other hand, there are times when we allow our minds to be constantly occupied with the ALMOST because had it not been for the ALMOST our lives would not be what they are today.

So where do you stand today? Is your ALMOST something you want to forget because it causes feelings of regret which haunt you? Or is your ALMOST something that you’re truly thankful for and has breathed new life in you? Which ALMOST can you identify with? Yet whichever we identify with there is often one word that is tied to ALMOST. It is the word ‘but’. It is the ‘but’ which gives ALMOST either something to rejoice over or to grieve over. Ever heard yourself saying:

I ALMOST married butÂ…
I ALMOST separated butÂ…
I ALMOST divorced butÂ…
I ALMOST died butÂ…
I ALMOST sinned butÂ…
I ALMOST messed up butÂ…
I ALMOST failed butÂ…
I ALMOST passed butÂ…
I ALMOST lost my faith in God butÂ…
I ALMOST gave up on life butÂ…
I ALMOST cursed butÂ…
I ALMOST fought butÂ…
I ALMOST lost my joy butÂ…
I ALMOST started toÂ…butÂ…
I ALMOST believed in Christ butÂ…

I donÂ’t know whatÂ’s your ALMOST today and how it has left you, encouraged or downcast. Let the ALMOST cause you to have a deeper appreciation for today. Till next Friday, GodÂ’s willing, let all of your ALMOST lead you to see the providence of God in your life. Even in the ALMOST God was and is at work.
