Psalm 119:43

Do not take the word of truth utterly out of my mouth. Psalm 119:43

In another translation the whole verse reads: Do not snatch your word of truth from me, for your regulations are my only hope. (NLT)

One prominent theme in Psalm 119 is the profound truth that the word of God is all sufficient and it reflects the very character of God himself. In verse 43 the psalmist is afraid that God is going to leave him totally wordless or deprived of the truth (GodÂ’s Word). Our falling into sin disables our speech and causes us to be lost without GodÂ’s laws. The fear experienced when we feel God is going to prevent us from pleading to the Him without any deliverance can be combated with GodÂ’s word which gives us hope. God is the author of our hope and we expect Him to appear and vindicate our trials, therefore we can believe what we read and continue to look to Him to prove himself strong. Hope combats fear so that no matter the afflictions we can cling to the truth learnt in the scriptures.

The word of God is sufficient and from it we learn that we can trust His character and His plan and purposes for mankind. As Christians today we are so blessed to have the Word of God to read and study. We learn of our need for salvation and God's miraculous provision of eternal life by trusting in the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Obeying God's Word gives us liberty.

God's commandments are our delights; therefore we must meditate on them day and night. What a great and awesome God we have who does not leave us without the witness of His Word!

At this Advent time we reflect on how God came as a babe born of humble estate - a sign of hope for this world. That babe still brings hope to us because he will be the great Saviour that saves us from sin which separates us from God. Our responsibility is to share this hope that the whole world might know.

Prayer:
“Come thou long expected Jesus,
Born to set thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us;
Let us find our rest in Thee.” Amen.
(Hymn 53:2a)
