Isaiah 60:19

The Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. Isaiah 60:19

The season of Advent is one of light. It points us to the light of the world and to the second coming of Jesus Christ. It is an acknowledgement that mankind, in the persons of Adam and Eve, sinned in the Garden of Eden. It acknowledges that God forgave them of their sin, and promised mankind that he would send a Messiah. This Messiah came in the form of Jesus Christ. He was crucified, died and rose again from the dead. He will come again to receive his own and to judge the quick and the dead. This is verified in Acts 1, verses 10 and 11:
Behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, “Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

The prophets in the Old Testament had some important characteristics, chief of which were:

1. They had a close relationship with God.

2. They had a vision for the future which was expressed in predicting doom and destruction followed by restoration and renewal.

They thus often became lonely men because their messages were not readily accepted since they were usually challenging the status quo. However, although they may have been rejected their messages could not be ignored. (See Ezekiel 3 vs 8-11)

One of the main themes of the Old Testament prophets was: prediction and messianic hope. They lived in the present but made predictions about the future.

In this verse, Isaiah looks forward to the New Jerusalem, a new heaven and earth, in which God and the lamb will be the everlasting light of the people.

Zechariah 2:5 also prophesied the same thing:
For I, saith the Lord, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her.

This idea is also expressed by John many years later inRevelation 21 vs-23, 24:
And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it, for the glory of God did lighten it, and the lamb is the light thereof. And the nations of them which are saved, shall walk in the light of it, and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.

And in Revelation 22 vs 3-5 it is written:
And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and his servants shall serve him.And they shall see his face, and his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there, and they need no candle, neither light of the sun, for the Lord giveth them light, and they shall reign forever and ever.

Let us therefore be cognizant of the second coming of Jesus Christ. Let us live to the glory of God in the way God would want us to live, following his precepts as given in the sacred scriptures and serving our fellowman. Then we can look forward to be with Jesus Christ when he makes his second appearance.

Prayer:
O holy Child, we know of your arrival when the darkness of the night was lightened by the glory of the Lord. We know of your motherÂ’s pondering heart, your guests of shepherds, kings and angels. We imagine ourselves there with you, O Christ. May the joy of this thought warm us this day. Amen.
