SAVE ME FROM ME!

As was done last year, for the month of August, each week our FF will be drawn from earlier submissions. This month will draw upon FF articles dating back to 2009. For those who donÂ’t know, the weekly FF was birthed as we were planning for a youth and young adult convention called Take it Back (TIB) which was held in Trinidad in 2006. Each Friday participants were invited to join together to focus on the approaching event. The FF has been going since then and for that we say thanks be to God!

I saw a sticker recently with a simple yet profound message: as long as there are tests in schools there will always be prayers. The truth is when students get desperate even the most ungodly will cry to God for success. The person who seems to be the most wretched, heartless and vile in a time of great distress will call out to God for help. Now you may not consider yourself to be evil but good. Yet as long as weÂ’re still in the flesh sin still stalks at our doors. So we too need to always remember God and cry out a prayer in desperate times if we must. That prayer is our FF for today: SAVE ME FROM ME!

No matter how much we may think that we exercise patience, self control or have everything all together, we all have the potential to be reckless, rash, impulsive or careless. Lying within the best of us is also the worst of us. It could appear as though there are two persons occupying one body. We may have come to Christ and received the gift of salvation by faith. Yet if someone or something rubs us the wrong way, we can revert to our old self. At such times we pray to God: SAVE ME FROM ME!

God could have delivered us from a sinful lifestyle that included activities and behaviours that were self destructive. We knew that if it were not for the LordÂ’s mercy we would have already been dead. And yet at time there may still be the yearning to return to what God pulled us away from. One hymn writer captures that tension with these words:
Prone to wander, Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love.
So then we pray SAVE ME FROM ME!

How does God answer this prayer as we engage in this ongoing conflict within and without? Live by the Spirit! Walk in the Spirit! Daily be in the Word! Sing songs of praise continuously! Pray without ceasing! The end result is that daily we are changed ‘from glory into glory’. Don’t be discouraged if you think your change is moving at a slower pace than others. God will do His work as long as you remain faithful! Continue to pray SAVE ME FROM ME!

The Apostle Paul was no stranger to this inner struggle and tension. He asserts that there is an assurance of victory and that God has provided an answer to such a prayer. He declares ‘Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord’ (Rom. 7:25). It’s a prayer that’s already been answered. Hallelujah!

Till next Friday, GodÂ’s willing, when you feel as if youÂ’re about to erupt on someone for a word that was spoken or action done; or youÂ’re being pulled back to what God has already delivered you from earnestly pray: SAVE ME FROM ME! God has already answered you: Jesus Christ is the answer!
