More Than Bread For Life
Jesus says, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35
Do you remember the boy who gave his lunch so that Jesus could feed the crowd? He must have wondered if his small lunch could make any impact on the situation. But he must have thought that Jesus was special enough to make a difference with the small lunch. His experience of Jesus must have taught him to expect the unexpected. At least his curiosity must have been aroused to see what would happen if he made this ridiculous offer.

And Jesus’ action that day must have thrilled the young boy. With a small portion of the simple bread of the ordinary man of his time Jesus was able to satisfy the needs of many. The lad must have been filled with awe. He must have been able to confirm, in that moment, what he had always suspected – that this was no ordinary man. Here was a man who could work miracles to satisfy the needs of humanity.
Hunger and thirst are the most basic of human need. Bread and water are the most basic commodities to satisfy these needs. Jesus had earlier suggested to the Woman at the Well that he would supply water which would leave the thirsty person fully quenched. Here he offers full satisfaction to those who come to him with those basic needs. Our share in the young boy’s experience of the feeding of more than five thousand from a small and simple meal leads us to recognize that Jesus is truly able to satisfy any need. Therefore when Jesus says that those who come to him will never hunger nor thirst, you can be confident that he is assuring you that he is able to address any need you may have. Therefore the invitation is extended to you to turn to him with your need. In these times of economic challenges, financial pressure, perplexing problems, fear of violence, family crises, and health issues, it is indeed reassuring to know that the ‘Bread of Life’ is available to address these concerns. Indeed, he is more than brad for life.
Prayer: O Bread of Life, satisfy the hunger of our souls as we come with our human needs. Like the lad with the loaves and fish, let us experience the awe of your miraculous intervention in your situation. Amen.
