ONE OF THE FEW!

The last time I checked I was told that there are now 6, 927,279, 349 people living on the face of the earth. In case you canÂ’t make sense of that figure, it works out to be about 6.93 billion people. Man thatÂ’s a lot of us living on this planet. But that figure only reflects those of us who are currently alive. But what about those who lived and are now dead? And if we look ahead at the future, what will the number look like for those yet to come? We can only speculate what the future number will look like. And itÂ’s anybodyÂ’s guess what the figures were centuries ago. But looking at the current numbers, it is staggering! And yet of the billions of people alive today just a FEW know Christ as Lord and Saviour and will enter into GodÂ’s Kingdom. Our FF for today is to ensure that you and reach out to others to make them ONE OF THE FEW!

When you think about it, it is impossible to say exactly how much is a FEW. In the Caribbean when we speak of a FEW it is always relative to the whole. Someone making a speech at a wedding may say that it will only lasts a FEW minutes and 20 minutes later thereÂ’s no sign of wrapping up. Since mango season is now in full swing, when your neighbor says that he has a few mangos for you, it could mean a big bag full. We get disappointed when an airline says that the flight will be delayed for a FEW minutes and half an hour later youÂ’re still waiting to board. If you have a large congregation and only a FEW members turn up on a particular Sunday, then there is disappointment with what would be considered a poor showing. That shows us just how difficult it is to say exactly how FEW is FEW.

It is precisely because we can’t do an exact count with FEW that I find Jesus’ words so gripping. Teaching about the way to Heaven and the way to hell, look at what Jesus says: “The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose the easy way. But the gateway to life is small, and the road is narrow, and only a FEW ever find it.” (Matt. 7: 13, 14). Don’t you wish that somehow Christ had said exactly how many would be included in the FEW? But in this context FEW is measured against many. Reasoning shows that many are more than FEW! So what Jesus is here teaching us that regardless of what the world’s population was, is or will be only a FEW will be on the narrow road leading to Heaven. That’s sad! And that should trouble us for when we look at our own families, at the people we call our friends, at the members in the Church we attend, at the strangers that we meet and greet and may never meet again, do we ever wonder who is on the side of the many or who is ONE OF THE FEW?

I suspect that many of you reading this FF could count yourself as ONE OF THE FEW. Praise God for that! But we cannot allow that to cause us for ONE moment to forget the many who are still not ONE OF THE FEW. Pray for them! Witness to them! Since Jesus never told us what numbers makes up the FEW, then it means that if you are ONE OF THE FEW you have a duty. It is to reach out to the many on the highway to hell each opportunity you have. With the Holy Spirit at work, then it is only a matter of time before ONE of the many becomes ONE OF THE FEW! When that happens heaven too rejoices!
