ONE ON ONE!

The recent NBA finals showed that it takes an entire team to win. Even though some may want to blame Lebron James for the Miami HeatÂ’s loss of the championship, the truth is that in a team sport no ONE person should be blamed. In the same way although Dirk Nowitzki was awarded the finalsÂ’ MVP, he was not the only ONE who contributed to Dallas MaverickÂ’s success. In team games other members of the team can cover your shortcomings, but when itÂ’s just a ONE ON ONE then thereÂ’s nobody to hide behind. ThereÂ’s nobody in the game to encourage or discourage you when itÂ’s a ONE ON ONE. YouÂ’re exposed and accept full responsibility for your loss or full credit for you win. There are seasons in our lives when even though we may want to have others surround us and cover us as in a team, thatÂ’s not the case. At such times it may well be that God is repositioning us to have some ONE ON ONE time. ThatÂ’s our FF for today ONE ON ONE!

How do you think youÂ’ll behave if ever you had the opportunity to have some ONE ON ONE time with letÂ’s sayÂ…President Obama? Or Queen Elizabeth II? The ONE ON ONE time with such public figures would probably leave us uncomfortable (and maybe them too). YouÂ’re not too sure what to say. We may even end up doing something embarrassing. But still we would leave that ONE ON ONE time feeling as though we were on top of the world. Why? Because we were that important to have been given some uninterrupted ONE ON ONE time with someone of such prominence!

Although some of us may never get to meet a world leader to have some ONE ON ONE time, each day there are people in our lives who are even more important than these celebrities. And they too would feel on top of the world if we were to give them some ONE ON ONE time. How better would the lives of our children be if mom/dad would pause long enough to give each child some ONE ON ONE time! How stronger our marriages would be if spouses could give each other some more ONE ON ONE time! How much improved the academic performance and general behaviour of our students if teachers and parents alike could afford some ONE ON ONE time! Relationship are preserved, strengthened, restored and rescued by one key ingredient – some ONE ON ONE time. That spells ONE word – presence!

And today God is also calling us to have some meaningful ONE ON ONE time. Matt. 6: 6 tells us how to get that ONE ON ONE time with God – “when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to Father secretly.” It’s the most important ONE ON ONE that we could ever have. It impacts all the other ONE ON ONE’s! Now let’s not fool ourselves genuine ONE ON ONE prayer time with God can be unsettling and even disturbing. But ONE ON ONE prayer moments with God are also the most liberating allowing you the freedom to speak from your heart and to listen to God’s voice. At such times no ONE else matters but God. Yet because of that ONE ON ONE time with God, you begin to see and fully understand the things and people in life that really matters. Our divine ONE ON ONE times directly impact our human ONE ON ONE moments. So begin with God! Life is a team sports but make time each for some ONE ON ONE – both divine and human!
