ADD SOME SALT!

I once heard about this man who was attempting to impress his family. He decided to cook some beef stew. Being a stranger to the kitchen he went into the cupboard and grabbed what he thought was SALT. He put some in the stew and tasted it. Not liking what he tasted he decided to ADD SOME more SALT. This time he threw in quite a bit. But a few minutes later as he tasted the pot he realized that he had made a grave error. What he thought was SALT was actually sugar. So he ended up not so much with a flavored stew but rather a sweetened one. Today for our FF I wonder just how different a flavor our lives would have if we all decided to intentionally ADD SOME SALT to the earth!

Have you ever gone out for a meal and see people order their food and even before they taste it they ADD SOME SALT? I’ve often wondered why would somebody do that? Is it that they know that the food is already bland and needs SOME flavor? Is it that their taste buds have become so accustomed to SALT that they can’t eat anything that’s not laced with SALT? There is no denying that SALT is a necessity. But medical practitioners are now saying that as a society we consume too much SALT with deadly consequences. So we now have food products that are labeled as ‘sodium free’ or ‘50% less sodium’. Even though it’s now considered chic to be cutting back and having less SALT, spiritually speaking now is the time to ADD SOME SALT in our world.

Too often Christians take their cue from the world instead of the other way around! As a result we too are cutting back on being the spiritual and moral SALT in the earth. Somehow it seems as if we too have cut back and have less SALT in our spiritual diet. That is tragic! Jesus was very explicit – ‘You are the SALT of the earth.’ (Matt. 5:13) So that means instead of there being less SALT, now more than ever believers need to ADD SOME SALT to the earth. We must be like those who ADD SOME SALT even before they take a taste of the food. We don’t need to taste the world’s foods first to know we need to ADD SOME SALT.

When we live in a time that marriage now has to be clearly defined and defended, it’s time to ADD SOME SALT; when taking a stand for what’s right based on truth and moral principles is politically incorrect, we badly need to ADD SOME SALT; when even Christians can justify their sins and do not want to be accountable to anyone else in the Body of Christ, we urgently need to ADD SOME SALT. When preaching the Gospel of Christ in a ‘free’ society labels you as being intolerant and closed mind, it’s time to ADD SOME SALT.

But before believers try to ADD SOME SALT, we must avoid a terrible danger. We dare not allow the SALTINESS to be removed from our SALT. Christ warns us against that likely scenario. If SALT looses the very quality that makes it SALT, then what does it become? What to do with SALTLESS SALT? Throw it away! (Matt. 5:13) If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, do 2 things. First, ask other believers to check your SALTINESS level regularly so that you donÂ’t become useless SALTLESS SALT. Second, as the SALT of the earth, ADD SOME SALT where God has placed you on this earth. Yes, we are the SALT of the earth. Therefore, itÂ’s time to ADD SOME SALT to the earth. When we do God will use us to change the world!
