GOD IS REVEALED!

Sometimes children ask questions that force you to think long and hard before you answer. Some weeks ago I was caught somewhat off guard when my last daughter innocently and sincerely asked me, “Daddy what does GOD look like?” How do you deal with a topic as dense and complex as GOD’s divine revelation but make it simple enough for a 6 year old to understand? After some awkward silence in which she naturally expected her father to know the answer, I replied, “Well GOD is a Spirit that means you can’t really see GOD. And yet everything that you see around you was created by GOD and paints a picture of what GOD looks like.” That led into another discussion about creation. I must admit that the drive was pretty long and I felt as if I was teaching an introductory course in theology. But the question still rings in my ears – what does GOD look like?

For a child, on the surface, it may simply be inquiring about wanting to have an image of the face of GOD. But if we dig deeper the question hits us at the core of our human search – how can I know GOD; can GOD be known at all; how does GOD reveal GOD’s self? Any discussion on how GOD IS REVEALED stirs up controversy for some. We can say GOD IS REVEALED through nature; in the beauty of creation; through humanity. But yet the same nature that is so beautiful and breathtaking can also be a deadly disastrous force. Plus, humanity through whom GOD IS REVEALED can at times be even more destruction to each other than nature’s fury. But in spite of humanity’s evil actions and injustice to each other, we still REVEAL who GOD IS.

And it is the contradiction in nature and humankind that propels us to keep searching for that perfect and wholesome revelation of who GOD IS. Maybe then we should ask not only how GOD IS REVEALED but also when. And that’s where Advent answers both. Advent says that GOD chose to REVEAL who GOD IS ‘in the fullness of time’. Advent says GOD REVEALED who GOD is when nothing less that the ‘very’ GOD became ‘very’ man in the person of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:19 declares ‘God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself.’ But Advent not only looks backward, it also points forward. It reminds us that there will be another ‘fullness of time’ when GOD will once again REVEAL who GOD IS. And that revelation will be received by all eyes on earth. On that day, there will be no need to ask ‘what GOD looks like’ for all eyes shall behold GOD in Christ. Till that day we pray, ‘even so come Lord Jesus!’

Today GOD IS REVEALED to those who sincerely want to know who GOD IS beyond nature and humanity. That full and complete revelation today can be had by believing in the finished work of Christ who died on Calvary to give us the gift of eternal life. With that new life, GOD’s divine revelation in imprinted on us. We’re recreated! Then we witness one of life’s greatest miracles – GOD IS REVEALED not only in Christ but also through us! Hallelujah! Christ in us, the hope of glory! This Advent let’s affirm – GOD IS REVEALED! And may our lives reflect that revelation so completely that to those who still ask what does GOD look like, we can say ‘we REVEAL the GOD-Christ!’
