GUARD YOURSELF!
Security companies have become big business these days. Whenever there is economic hardship, most often those who have the least suffer the most. At the same time those who have the most do all in their power to GUARD even more closely what they have. Some people will get GUARD dogs, install security cameras or erect higher fences. Celebrities hire body GUARDS to ensure their safety. GUARDING and protecting the lives of the world’s political leaders is the full time job of a core of people. It is not because these people can’t protect themselves but such persons are placed under GUARD because they are considered to be of great value – a VIP. In fact once we see somebody being GUARDED we immediately assume that the person must be important.
But have you ever wondered why some persons need to have a GUARD? Are their lives in danger? Are people out to get them? Are they just living in fear or is the fear real? I find it rather interesting that even in Churches now, there are persons who are on GUARD while the service is going on. IÂ’ve asked myself do such persons worship or even listen to the sermon or are they too busy keeping an eye out for the unexpected? And yet with all of the GUARDING that takes place, political leaders still get assassinated; members are still attacked while worship services are going on in Churches; even the police, the GUARDIANS of our communities are being shot at. The truth is no matter how carefully others try to GUARD us, nothing is ever 100% guaranteed. ItÂ’s known that even those who are employed to GUARD can turn around and injure those they are supposed to be GUARDING.
What then do we do? Where to turn? I invite us to reflect today on this thought – GUARD YOURSELF! By that I do not mean that you carry your own weapon in your bag (like Madea). It’s not a call for you to learn the most effective karate moves either. But to GUARD YOURSELF is to acknowledge first that we are more than flesh and blood, the things we wear or that which we own. One day all of that can be seen will be no more. It is that which cannot be seen and touched, that is not temporal which truly needs to be GUARDED.
So then the call to GUARD YOURSELF is to GUARD the treasure of our integrity; it is to GUARD the value of our Christian witness; it is to stand GUARD against our internal lives being far removed from our public lives; it is to GUARD our speech that we don’t bear false witness against each other; it is to GUARD against having bad attitudes; it is to GUARD and preserve our life’s legacy; it is to GUARD our core values; it is to stand GUARD for the truths of the Gospel which are daily being eroded by political correctness. Others may GUARD us physically. For sure, God GUARDS those who are God’s from dangers – seen and unseen. But there are just some things in life that we have to GUARD ourselves.
Remember that we are God’s marvelous workmanship – a priced investment, a one of a kind! As of today, decide to GUARD YOURSELF!
