Praise God In All Circumstances

Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the end of the earth! Isaiah 42:10

Our attitude to life is directly related to how we perceive God. If we do not believe in God, or if we believe that God is not concerned about human affairs, the actions that we take will not have God factored into them. So if we are suffering we may seek the support of family and friends, we may go to the doctor, but will we not think about God. If we are cheerful, because it is our birthday or we got a promotion, we will probably spend the time partying without the thought of God.

People who acknowledge that there is a God take a different approach to life. The challenge that we face though is that some of us decide which aspects of our lives we are going to allow God to be involved in. Some of us only seek to get close to God when we are suffering. We remember how to pray, we ask others to pray for us, we ask the pastor to consecrate a bottle of olive oil. But when the going is good we do not think God has to get involved in our fun.

The converse is true for others. When the going is good we thank God and praise Him for His blessings, but when challenges come we forget God and turn to the obeah-man or some other source for help.

James in his letter reminds us that God is interested in every aspect of our lives, whether things are good or bad. So he encourages us “Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise”. (James 5:13)

Whatever your circumstances may be remember to involve God – pray and sing a song.

Prayer – God, help me at all times, no matter what the circumstances I face, to put you at the centre of my life. When I suffer remind me that you care for me. When I am happy remind me that you are the source of my joy. Amen.
