BE SOLD OUT!

On Tuesday of this past week, we here in the US Virgin Islands joined other Americans on the US mainland in casting our ballots to decide who should be our elected political leaders. During the weeks leading up to the general elections we were bombarded with campaign ads through every possible means - radio, television and newspaper. Plus there were persons walking around with t-shirts bearing the name of their candidate of choice. Others had stickers on their cars or banners flying signaling who they were supporting. Then there were the foot soldiers, distributing pamphlets trying to convince you why you should vote for a particular candidate. I was struck by just how SOLD OUT some persons were about why candidate X would do better than candidate Y. They were so SOLD OUT that they were constantly witnessing to others about why they should throw their support behind a particular individual.

I observed how we in this territory and those on the US mainland were consumed with persons seeking to be elected. It was only two years ago that in fact the whole world was in a similar state as we were waiting to see if Obama would have been elected President. Now the talk is will he be re-elected for a second term in light of TuesdayÂ’s results. And as I saw just how SOLD OUT persons were on ensuring that another human being fulfilled his/her dream, I couldnÂ’t help but wonder how different would our society if all who sit in pews on Sunday mornings were as SOLD OUT about the gospel of Christ. How different would our world be if in every Church every member was SOLD OUT?

I wonder how many of the persons canvassing for a political candidate by wearing a t-shirt, putting a sticker on the car or handing out pamphlets would do the same if they were being asked to present Christ. I asked myself would they be willing to be as open in public about shirt that says – JESUS – the same way they were willing to bear the name of their candidate of choice. I wondered how is it that a professing Christian can open his/her mouth and present the virtues of the candidate of his/her choice or the reason why the opponent is undeserving, but struggle to present the simple ABC’s of the Gospel of Christ? Is it because of shame, lack of zeal, disobedience, fear of being labeled a Christian? As a Christ follower, I ponder how is it that I see in someone a burning passion for a political hopeful, who we often expect so much from and yet can leave us disappointed. And yet that same person is as good as dead when it comes to pointing others to Christ. I’ve concluded it’s not that they’re not SOLD OUT. It’s just that they’re not SOLD OUT for Christ.

When you and I become SOLD OUT for Christ, nothing can keep us quiet. By the power of the Holy Spirit we boldly declare to the world the simple Gospel – Jesus died to save humanity. That’s it! We speak it! We live it! Christian leaders recently gathered in South Africa (Lausanne Movement Congress) to once again remind the body of Christ of the urgency to win the world for Christ. When you and I are SOLD OUT then we become “the whole Church taking the whole Gospel to the whole world.” As we are SOLD OUT on political leaders, let’s be even more SOLD OUT for Christ. Our FF - BE SOLD OUT!
