HOLDING ON & LETTING GO!

For the month of August, each week our FF will be drawn from some of the early submissions that were done dating back to 2005/2006. The weekly FF was birthed as we were planning for a youth and young adult convention called Take it Back (TIB) which was held in Trinidad in 2006. Each Friday the participants were invited to join together and focus on the approaching event. I felt moved by God to continue the weekly FF and here we are now in 2010. IÂ’ve rewritten some making editorial changes since the FF now is no longer within the context of TIB.

I confess: as a young boy I used to hop onto one particular bus that ran in our village. The bus would make its first stop at the entrance to the village while I lived at the other end. Hopping onto the bus was the easy part, staying on and getting off – well that was a whole other matter. To stay on meant HOLDING ON tightly. It was not a long ride but looking back now we (of course I was not alone) were living dangerously. But getting off demanded certain skills, first LETTING GO, jumping off and keep running (most times away from the driver or adults getting off the bus – you didn’t want any report to get home). As I reflect on those boyhood days, I invite you to consider our FF for today which is HOLDING ON & LETTING GO.

It’s election season here in the USA and even local politicians are doing all in their power to HOLD ON to their political positions. Voters are being wooed. Money is being spent – lots of it! Politicians are trying their best to convince voters why they should not LET GO of them as their representatives. In order to HOLD ON to something one must first have a firm grip on it. And how ironic that the longer we HOLD ON, the more difficult it is to LET GO. Just ask the politicians! But when we think more deeply about this, HOLDING ON & LETTING GO are really flip sides of the same coin. You cannot HOLD ON without first LETTING GO. And it is only when we LET GO that our hands are freed to HOLD ON.

Today I want us to consider to what are we HOLDING ON and what in our lives we should be LETTING GO? HOLDING ON to God means LETTING GO of that which displeases God. HOLDING ON to your marriage means LETTING GO of anything that threatens to undo the solemn vows we made. HOLDING ON to your faith means LETTING GO of doubt. HOLDING ON to hope means LETTING GO of despair. HOLDING ON to your basic values means LETTING GO of the world view which says anything goes once it feels good.

I wonder which is more important: HOLDING ON or LETTING GO. Maybe it depends on what we’re HOLDING ON to & LETTING GO of. If we’re insecure we can HOLD ON to what is known and seemingly safe. And yet it could be that for God to move us in that place where our destiny and purpose lines up with our will then that may mean LETTING GO – even if you’re not too sure what exactly is there for you to be HOLDING ON to. That is called trusting in God (Abraham is told to sacrifice Isaac). Here's a truth that I've discovered: when you’re walking by faith, following hard after God, there will always come a time when you will be instructed to LET GO. When God says to LET GO, there’s only one thing to do – LET GO. And when God says HOLD ON, that’s what you do – HOLD ON. Somehow the Holy Spirit gives you the strength and grace for you to be HOLDING ON & LETTING GO.

Today, look at the things, people and situations that youÂ’re HOLDING ON to. What needs LETTING GO so that you can move to HOLDING ON to the new things God wants to do in your life? Till next Friday, keep HOLDING ON and donÂ’t be afraid of LETTING GO!
