Isaiah 2:4

The Lord shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Isaiah 2:4

Swords into ploughshares and spears into pruning hooks. Tools to kill shall be re-formed to tools of agriculture to grow bread and wine. Peace and safety instead of violence and war. Growth and wealth instead of destruction and the misery which follows it.
Swords are not needed anymore, if men stop going to fight. Spears are useless, if men have no need to attack anyone. What a vision for the future! A vision of peace.
But we live in present times. Why do people fight? Why do people harm each other? Why do people hurt each other – we do not even need swords and spears to do it, we do it by words or by not speaking with each other, by a look, by back biting; there is more than one means to live fighting and in un-peace. Why seems it so impossible to live in peace?

People say, they need to defend themselves. States men say, it is a pre-emptive measurement. People feel that injustice is done to them, that is why. People feel not safe without power.

Peace and justice belong together. When I feel not threatened, I do not need to defend. When I am satisfied with what I have, I do not need to fight for more. When there is justice, then there is peace.

The Lord shall arbitrate for many peoples. The Lord will do righteousness for many people. He will give each one his right.

The Lord has done justice and righteousness for the people. The Lord has assured everyone that he is saved – safe. He said: Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubles, and do not let them be afraid (John 14:27).The Lord died that we shall be saved.

Today, on the Silent Sabbath, we remember our Lord lying in the grave, that we might have peace.

No swords, no spears, no weapons, but ploughshares, pruning hooks, means for blessing. Peace.

Prayer:
Lord, our God, you God of life and peace, you do not want death, but life; you do not want destruction but preservation. Help us to repent from the deadly ways in which we are caught. Liberate u from the delusion that we could ever find security by threatening each other. Show mercy, for you have reconciled to yourself all things, whether on earth or in heaven. Amen.
