Our Caring God

"Trust in him at all times, pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us." Ps.62:8

This weekÂ’s Watchword seems to continue the theme of GodÂ’s care for his people. It suggests three (3) interesting and important characteristics of God. These characteristics are: reliability, confidentiality, and security. Thus the text calls us to look to him, given who he is and how he operates.

“Trust in him at all times”, we are told. This suggests reliability or dependability. It speaks of someone upon whom others can depend. Frequently in life we seek the assistance of others and find ourselves disappointed. The person upon whom we depended did not have the necessary skill, or could not find the time, or simply forgot. It is not that way with God. He is both able and available. Furthermore, he is fully dependable. He needs no Blackberry to alert him to his responsibility. In fact, Eph.3:20 declares that he ‘is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think’. Therefore, as the Psalmist suggests, you can ‘trust in him at all times’ and find that he never fails you.

The writer continues, with the encouragement to “Pour out your heart before him”. Many have poured out their hearts to friends and found that they could have gone to CNN with the information. But God is not like this. His operation is of complete confidentiality. You will never find that your concern is passed on from person to person. Never will you find that your confidence is broken. Never will you need to wonder what he will do with the information he has from you. God is trust-worthy. Paul said, “I . . . am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed to him”. (2 Tim.1:12) Hence, you can ‘pour out your heart’ to him.

In concluding this theme the text says, “God is a refuge for us”. This speaks of security. The biblical cities of refuge provided safety for those who entered. God provides such safety for his children. The Psalmist elsewhere said, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Ps. 46:1) Nowhere else can you be as safe as you are with God. Nowhere else is there such protection provided. Wherever on earth you go thieves are likely to attack, or corrosion take place. But you can be confident of the security you have with your heavenly Father. He is truly your place of safety.

In God the characteristics of reliability, confidentiality and security are combined. And the Psalmist highlights this fact in today’s Watchword. Hence, you can, as the text declares, ‘trust in him at all times’, and ‘pour out your heart before him’, for ‘God is a refuge for us’.

Prayer:
O God, the refuge and strength of all who put their trust in you, help us to feel secure as we rely upon you to take care of our concerns, and as we cast our burdens on you, knowing that you do care for us. Amen.
