"This is the Lord's Doing"
The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the LordÂ’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. Psalm 118: 22-23
“This is the Lord’s Doing"
The Saviour is pictured as a discarded stone that is then reused as the most significant stone of all, the Chief Cornerstone. This potent imagery depicts JesusÂ’ rejection by many. The prophet Isaiah prophesied this: He was despised and rejected by men (53:3a); and Mark has it recorded that Jesus predicted His own rejection as the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejectedÂ… (8:31b).

This discarded stone has become the chief cornerstone, yet what is a marvel to me is that the psalmist declared “This is the Lord’s doing”! All along it was part of the Heavenly Father’s plan to allow this to happen - his humiliation (rejection) and exaltation (at the right hand of God), from discarded stone to top stone. It happened because God permitted in order to fulfil His purpose for the fallen race of Adam. Peter in his second sermon (Acts 4) before the Sanhedrin, confidently declared that [Jesus] whom [they have] crucified but whom God raised from the dead… [is] the stone [they the] builders rejected which has become the capstone” (10-11)
This is the LordÂ’s doing. WHY???
Peter provided the answer in the same passage just quoted. To provide salvation for all who will believe and accept Him (Acts 4:12).
It is the LordÂ’s doing, because only God could do this marvellous and unexpected work. Now the cross, the symbol of JesusÂ’ rejection, has become the symbol of our salvation.
This is God’s work - We rub our eyes-we can hardly believe it! – The Message Bible
So, Beloved, let us join the psalmist in the following verses Â…letÂ’s celebrate and be festive! Salvation now, God, Salvation now! Oh yes, God- a free and full life! (24-25 The Message) This is the LordÂ’s doing.
What does this mean? It points to His great love for each sinner, so much so that one songwriter penned these words: when He was on the cross, you and I were on His mind.
It also tells us on whom we can build – that CHIEF CORNERSTONE , that sure foundation! (see 1 Peter 2:6)
May the words of John Chandler (1837) in the Moravian Book of Worship (#517) give you comfort and hope with this truth -
Christ is our cornerstone, on him alone we buildÂ… on his great love our hopes we place of present grace and joys above. AMEN!
This is the LordÂ’s doing.
