Psalm 54:4
Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with themthat uphold my soul. Psalm 54:4
In this new year it surely is reassuring to know that the Lord is our helper and to experience him as such. The times have been challenging and continue to be so. The year has begun with the thought of austerity measures in the economic arena. Lay-offs and cut-backs loom imminent. Many challenges lie ahead of us. In the face of such gloom it is good to know that God is our helper.

The call is for you not to despair in doom and gloom, but to experience God as your helper – to know, as the Psalmist suggests, that ‘the Lord is the one who sustains’ you (NIV); he is the one he is your ‘defender’ (GNB). Therefore trust him with your future. Be confident that there is the certainty of God’s help amidst the uncertainty of the economy. And trust him to hold your hand and carry you through such a wilderness.
The song-writer says:
Days are filled with sorrow and care
Hearts are lonely and drear;
Troubled soul, the Savior can see
Every heartache and tear.
Burdens are lifted at Calvary:
Jesus is very near.
Assuredly, you can join the song-writer and sing these words amidst the challenges! Say with the Psalmist: “The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?” (Ps.118:6) OR: “In God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.” (Ps.56:4) Face this year with the confident assurance that ‘if God be for us, who can be against us!’ (Rom.8:31)
Prayer:
Thank you, O God, for being there for us! Help us to be confident in you and trust you with all our future, assured that whilst we may not know about tomorrow, we do know who holds tomorrow and we can know that He holds our hand. Amen.
