Genesis 12:2

The Lord said to Abram, “I will bless you and you will be a blessing.”   Genesis 12:2 (NIV)

The blessings promised to Abram were many: A good reputation; a great nation through his descendants; blessings for his allies. However, they were preceded by a command from the Lord to gather his family, leave his home and proceed to a new land.  Most would think this an arduous task for someone of seventy-five, but, without question or complaint, Abram obeyed. So steadfast was he that even when commanded to sacrifice his only son Isaac he obeyed, trusting that the Lord would guide his path and provide every need.

We all know Abram's faith was rewarded and the ultimate blessing which he granted to the world was that of his descendant and our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  As such, in this Advent season as we celebrate the arrival of that blessing, may we realise that it now falls to us as Abram's spiritual descendants to continue in that great charge. We, who having been blessed by accepting the fruits of that great sacrifice, must now go forth and be a blessing to the world so that all may know the grace and glory of our Lord.  Such is our command; will you, like Abram, go by faith?

Prayer:  O Lord God, who has called us, your servants, to paths yet untrodden and through perils yet unknown, give us strength to go out with courage, secure in the knowledge that Your hand is leading us and Your love is supporting us.  Amen.
