TO KEEP MOVING, NO SLEEPING!

One of the major roadways leading into the capital city of Charlotte Amalie here in St. Thomas has been under construction for years. Traffic is always a nightmare in that particular area. I usually go through this area at least twice a day. Earlier this week, we were stuck as usual in a very long line of traffic with no one moving. I noticed that two cars ahead of me that the driver overtook a white pick-up truck. Naturally I thought to myself that this white vehicle had broken down. The other vehicle in front of me also passed. I was so thankful to finally see the traffic moving that when it was my turn I did the same thing. Don’t know if I was curious or just nosy, I looked over to see what was wrong with the white pick-up truck as I slowly passed. I thought it odd that the engine was still running. And so I took a closer look. I couldn’t believe my eyes. The driver was still at the steering wheel with his head propped up by his left hand on the door and his eyes closed. Guess what? He was fast asleep. The car behind me passed him too and by the time I looked in my rear view mirror I noticed that he finally got going and rejoined the slow moving traffic. Can you imagine that this guy was overtaken by at least four vehicles before he was awakened. I thought about that encounter and it led me to share with you today’s FF – TO KEEP MOVING, NO SLEEPING!

SLEEP is sweet. It refreshes us especially after a long hard day at work or school. Our bodies were not designed to always be on the go. I firmly believe that one of the main reasons why God, in his infinite wisdom gave us the night is so that we can get some much needed SLEEP. And when we allow ourselves enough SLEEP then when it is time to get up and get MOVING, weÂ’ve been reenergized and weÂ’re ready to go. So we greet the day ready to face whatever challenges that may come our way. We go to work and become productive at our jobs. Those who are students go to school and apply themselves to the lessons being taught. By the time we get to the end of the day we can look back and see just how much weÂ’ve accomplished all because of having had some good SLEEP.

But there’s an irony here. In the same way that SLEEP replenishes our batteries and gets us MOVING so that we accomplish so much in life, that same SLEEP can immobilize our MOVEMENT. How so? The same SLEEP which we avoid and ignore because we have convinced ourselves that there’s so much to do and so little time, has a way of arresting us when we least expect it. Our minds may say no to SLEEP and our bodies may be obedient for a little while. But eventually SLEEP will come and when it does come, nothing can stop it from taking over every part of our being. SLEEPING and controlled MOVING doesn’t happen at the same time. SLEEP has the power to short circuit any MOVING that we may be doing. But this is not just a physical principle. It is also applicable to our spiritual walk with God as well. Let’s not fool ourselves. We can lose our spiritual momentum, that drive which we once had when it came to fulfilling God’s purpose in our lives. We should ask ourselves, could it possibly be that it is not so much that God has stopped directing the path of our lives but rather that we have allowed ourselves to fall ASLEEP at the time when we ought to be MOVING forward towards our divine destination? We are reminded in Romans 13: 11 “….the hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.”

Maybe today the Holy Spirit might be saying to us simply and directly, “Now is not the time to be SLEEPING. It’s the time KEEP MOVING.” There’s still so much to cover on our journey. There will be a time to SLEEP and when that time comes then do just that – SLEEP. But when it’s time for us to be MOVING forward, let’s be fully awakened. For if we are TO KEEP MOVING, then there can be NO SLEEPING at the same time when we should be MOVING!
