Lamentations 3:31-32

The Lord will not reject forever. Although he causes grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love.   Lamentations 3:31-32

Sometimes we think that God has forsaken us.  The reminder, as we bring the year to a close, is that he has compassion on us and shows us his constant love.  This is a theme that we will need as we enter and navigate the new year.

Earlier in the chapter Jeremiah, the writer, had said, “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.  They are new every morning.” (Lam.3:22-23)  The same compassion that brought God’s Son Jesus into the world is present standing by us every moment.  His faithfulness is great.

With the songwriter, let us therefore be assured thus:
“He will never fail us, He will not forsake;
His eternal covenant He will never break.
Resting on his promise, What have we to fear?
God is all-sufficient For the coming year.”
(Hymn 579 v 4)

Prayer:
Help us, O Lord, to trust you in the new year to sustain us through your abundant love – that same love that gave us Jesus.   Amen.
