Psalm 55:16
I call upon God, and the Lord will save me. Psalm 55:16
What a wonderful thought and precious promise! It is especially precious as we anticipate the reminder of the Palm Sunday experience of the crowd shouting “Hosanna” – ‘save now’. The people recognized, in that moment, their Messiah and Saviour. The Psalmist here recognizes in God one who will save him as well. What of you today?

The Psalmist saw deliverance in his God. Many are the occasions when the Book of the Psalms speaks of such deliverance. (e.g. Ps.34:4; Ps.62:1; Ps.89:1; Ps.16:1)The children of Israel experienced this repeatedly, some of which is reported in the Psalms (see Ps.135; Ps.136). The death and resurrection of Christ bring the ultimate salvation.
Whatever the situation, then, God can deliver us. Be assured that ‘the Lord’s hand is not shortened that it cannot save’. (Isaiah 59:1) Hence, in our circumstances from day to day we can say in the words of today’s doctrinal text: “On God we have set our hope that he will rescue us again.” (2 Cor.1:10)
Prayer:
O Lord, help us to know that we can say confidently with the hymn-writer:
“I fully am persuaded and joyfully declare,
IÂ’m never left unaided, my Father hears my prayer;
His comforts never fail me, he stands at my right hand;
When tempests fierce assail me, they’re calm at his command.” (Hymn 322 v.2) Amen.
