December 18 - Psalm 109:31

For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul. Psalm 109:31

During this Advent season, let us remember that there is one who came to stand beside us and save us from those who seek to condemn us. We may not all be suffering but the essence of struggles lies with all of us. God is ever present; he came to save the poor, sick, the dying and the weak.

Psalm 109:31

He stands at the right hand of the needy, to save them from those who would condemn them to death. Psalm 109:31

God looks out for all his people. And ‘his people’ includes the needy and under-privileged. The declaration of the Psalmist here is that God stands ready to protect those who need him in any situation. He recognizes that, as human beings, we are too often under attack. Some of these attacks are strong enough to force spiritual and emotional death. This can even lead to physical death. But God is always on hand to protect.

Job 40:3,4

Job answered the Lord: “See, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth.” Job 40:3,4

The Thompson Chain-Reference Bible renders this text in this way:
‘Then Job answered the Lord, and said, (4) “Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth . . .”

Moreover, in the 5th verse Job admits that he has already said too much and he declares that he will have nothing more to say.

Zechariah 8:13

Do not be afraid, but let your hands be strong. Zechariah 8:13

The watchword for today is part of a longer verse which reads as follows: And it shall come to pass, that as ye were a curse among the heathen, O house of Judah, and house of Israel: so will I save you, and ye shall be a blessing: fear not, but let you hands be strong.

God’s word states that we are a curse, yet he laid down his life for us and saved us. In Romans 3 v 23, it says ‘for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God’. God promised to save us and bless us if we fear not, and have faith. That is why Jesus came down to the earth - to give his life to save us.

December 14 - Isaiah 43:21

“This people I have formed for myself; they shall declare my praise.” Isaiah 43:21

In this season of Advent we are reminded that it is a time of expectant waiting, as we prepare to celebrate JesusÂ’ Nativity at Christmas. In the Barbadian context it falls around the period of the celebration of Independence which is also an expectant time for us, as we look to the future for our country and celebrate our past.

Isaiah 43:21

This people I have formed for myself; they shall declare my praise. Isaiah 43:21 (NKJV)

God calls his people to give praise to him. This is a recurring theme, and one that is picked up by the Psalmists. The suggestion given for the praise here is the act that God has made this people and expect some loyalty from them. This immediately draws attention to the ‘four and twenty elders’ of Revelation 4:11 who sing: “Worthy art thou, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for thou dist create all things, and by thy will they existed and were created.”
