Job 14:1

Man born of woman is of few days and full of trouble. Job 14:1

The text for today expresses a very pessimistic view of human life. Not only is it short, it is also ‘full of trouble’. Job’s sentiments here are understandable for in spite of his living a godly and righteous life, he has been afflicted by all kinds of evil. His life has become a nightmare of pain and mourning. In his bitterness Job sees more hope for a tree than for man. When a tree is cut down, it can sprout again but man dies and is laid low, he breathes his last and is no more (14:7-10).

Jonah 2:8

Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs. Jonah 2:8 (NIV)

Grace is GodÂ’s unmerited favour. This is offered generously to us, his children. It comes in varied forms, including:
Supply of need (Phil.4:19)
Protection (Ps.27)
Guidance (Prov.3:5-6)
Ability to accomplish (Phil.4:13)
Power (2 Tim.1:7; Isa.40:29)
Deliverance (1 Cor10:13; 2Pet.2:9))
His abiding presence (Heb.13:5)
Peace (Isa.26:3)
Total care (Ps.23)
Indeed he has said, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Cor.12:9) Truly, God’s grace is available to all and could easily be yours.

In spite of this availability, many have failed to see its value and usefulness. Many have gone in other directions in the hope of advancing. But, as Jonah realized and confessed when he hit ‘rock bottom’ in the belly of the large fish, pursuit of ‘vanities’ or ‘worthless idols’ will prove useless and rob one of real benefits.

Get Back On Track

Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs. Jonah 2: 8.

We all know the story of Jonah, how he disobeyed God and left the path that God had set him on. His disobedience led him to a ship going away from his expected destination and he was thrown overboard then swallowed up by a large fish, which vomited him on the shores of the land God had sent him in the first place. TodayÂ’s text is part of the prayer he prayed from the belly of the whale, giving thanks while seeking mercy.

Psalm 22:27

All ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord; and all the families of the nations shall worship together. Psalm 22:27

In the prayer we so fondly call The Lord’s Prayer, we pray, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” In this Psalm, we look forward to the coming of God’s kingdom on this earth. “All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord”, the verse says. When John the Baptist announced that the Kingdom of God was at hand, he was announcing the coming of Jesus Christ (Matthew 3:1-11). This was not a physical kingdom as his followers had hoped. It is established in the believers’ hearts as his crucifixion and resurrection lead us to confess him as the risen and victorious one who is Lord of lord and King of kings.

Jeremiah 24:6

I will set my eyes upon them for good. I will build them up, and not tear them down; I will plant them, and not pluck them up. Jeremiah 24:6

The prophet Jeremiah saw in his vision two baskets of figs, and they were set before the temple of the Lord, ready to be offered as firstfruits to the honour of God. The figs in one basket were extraordinarily good, but those in the other basket were extremely bad. The good figs had ripened early and were acceptable and most prized. The bad figs were such as could not be eaten. The children of men are as all of the fruits of the fig tree, capable of being made serviceable to God and man. God intended by this vision of Jeremiah to raise the dejected spirit of those who had gone into captivity by assuring them of a happy return, and to humble and awaken the proud spirits of those who continued in Jerusalem, by alerting them of a miserable captivity.

Psalm 63:1

O God, you are my God, I seek you, my soul thirsts for you. Psalm 63:1

What are Psalms? – A collection of songs of praise to God, whom we should recognize as our Creator, Sustainer and Redeemer. The Psalms together form a book of praise, forgiveness, thankfulness and trust.

One can look at praise as recognizing, appreciating and expressing God’s greatness. God is all powerful and He always acts at the right time. His power is shown by the way He reveals himself to us. Therefore, when we feel powerless, whom can we turn to? God only – He can and will grant us the strength to overcome despair, doubt, fear and any pain or trial we may be facing. We can pray earnestly and humbly and He will deliver, protect and sustain us.

1 Samuel 2:1

I rejoice in your salvation. 1 Samuel 2:1 (NASB)

Hannah was able to make this declaration because she had experienced GodÂ’s favour and deliverance. Hannah was one of the wives of Elkanah of Mount Ephraim. Hannah had a very humiliating experience because ElkanahÂ’s other wife Peninnah had children and she had none. Unfortunately for her Peninnah frequently mocked her.

TAKE THE DIRECT APPROACH!

Are you familiar with the saying, “there are many ways to skin a cat?” In an era of political correctness such an expression may not be acceptable to animal rights activists. But it is simply a figure of speech which reflects that one can take several APPROACHES in addressing a situation or individuals. In some instances there’s not necessarily a right or wrong way to tackle an issue. The real question may be which is the best APPROACH? Sometimes a particular APPROACH will yield positive results with one person. But then you may have to try another APPROACH with someone else in order to achieve the same outcome. It takes wisdom to decide which APPROACH is best. But for our FF today I want us to consider being bold and courageous enough to TAKE THE DIRECT APPROACH. That’s our FF for today TAKE THE DIRECT APPROACH!

Isaiah 54:4

Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed. Isaiah 54:4

The New Living Translation renders the whole verse as follows: Fear not, you will no longer live in shame. Don’t be afraid there is no more disgrace for you. You will no longer remember the shame of your youth and the sorrows of widowhood. You may recall Paul in his writings to Timothy advising that we should “take care of widows” (1 Tim. 5:3). What a humanitarian appeal!

Are You a Hearer or a Teller?

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or weary; his understanding is unsearchable. Isaiah 40: 28.

The prophet Isaiah has been the bearer of bad news to God’s people. He has foretold the Babylonian captivity in the previous chapter, and in this chapter he seeks to prepare God’s people for this eventuality. God will deliver them out of it, and God will bless them through it. Today’s text stands out in this discourse. It is a call to those who may doubt God’s ability to do as He has promised. ‘Look’, the prophet seem to be saying. ‘Look and listen, and you will experience the power of God at work right before you.

KEEP FIGHTING!

People react differently when it comes to FIGHTS. There are some who just love to FIGHT. ItÂ’s as if FIGHTING is in their DNA. These people donÂ’t run away from FIGHTS. In fact they may even go looking to start a FIGHT. Then there are those who hate to FIGHT. They disappear at the first sign of a FIGHT. We may call such persons cowards. But maybe they should be seen peacemakers. But there are those who donÂ’t like to FIGHT but love to be on the side line watching the FIGHT. These days such persons quickly pull out their cell phones to tape the FIGHT and afterwards post it on their face book page or you tube for the world to see. However we may feel about FIGHTING, there will come a time in our lives when we have no other choice but to KEEP ON FIGHTING. ThatÂ’s our FF for today KEEP ON FIGHTING!

Called Before the Lord.

Assemble the people for me, and I will let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me as long as they live on the earth, and may teach their children to do so. Deut. 4: 10.

Today is ValentineÂ’s Day and I want to wish for you all a very special day of love. For those who think they have no one to love them on this day, remember John 3: 16, the ValentineÂ’s day verse. For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Happy ValentineÂ’s Day.

SHOW ME JESUS!

Ever heard of the game-song, “there’s a brown girl in the ring?” It was a big hit back in the day when children’s games meant interacting with other children. However, today children’s play time is an individual activity involving a hand held electronic device. But in that game-song the girl in the centre of the circle was urged on to SHOW ME your motion. And with that invitation she had to SHOW how good a dancer she was. Memories! Being centre stage was her opportunity to reveal not only what she knew but how well she could express all she knew. It was a moment to be on parade! With that in mind our FF for today is to open our ears to a world that is crying out SHOW ME JESUS!

His Power is Sufficient.

More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters, more majestic than the waves of the sea, majestic on high is the Lord! Psalm 93: 4

Psalm 93 is a short hymn [5 verses] of praise, used to celebrate the rule of God over the world. It is believed that this is one of a number of Psalms used at festivals to celebrate the Kingship of God. There was no doubt in the minds of God’s people that God was enthroned upon the earth. Somehow they saw the need to constantly remind themselves of this fact. As Moravians we too reminded ourselves of the majesty and dominion of our Savior when we declared Christ as Head of our church. Indeed ‘the Lord is King’.
