Tend and Keep It

The Lord God took the man and put him to the Garden of Eden to till it and keep it.
Genesis 2:15

Very simply and in a straightforward way, God states the purpose for which the Garden was created and the role of humans in it. It was a set of expanded instructions to that which was stated in Genesis 1: 26, 28, concerning subduing, having dominion over, tilling and keeping the earth.

Till or tend comes from the Hebrew word which means to “work or serve” thus referring to the ground or a garden – to cultivate so that more can grow and bear fruit.

TIME TO SHIFT FOCUS?

The book of Lamentations was written in a poetic style by the prophet Jeremiah as he mourned the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple there in 586 BC by King Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian King. The word Lamentation means weeping or expression of grief.

Where Is Your Salvation?

Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! Rev.7:10

In John’s vision of heaven the crowd around the throne fittingly ascribed salvation to ‘God and to the Lamb’. This must be a reminder to us that salvation is from God, and indeed from God alone. Hence the word of Peter in the Book of Acts comes to mind and is very relevant: “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12) This confirms that frustration will result from your efforts to take care of your affairs on your own or by looking to other sources. Marian’s encounter with a psychic demonstrates this fact.
